TAMPA, Florida (AP) - A 28-year-old who Hillsborough deputies said killed a Tampa man in October is accused of trying to steal his victim's identity to commit tax fraud.

Hillsborough detectives announced Wednesday the arrest of Jason J. Whitfield, who is in jail awaiting trial on second-degree murder.

Authorities say Whitfield provided the personal information of four people to a contact outside the jail. One of the four people was Michael Massaline, the 26-year-old man deputies said Whitfield shot and killed on Oct. 24.

Officials say Whitfield gave the outside contact specific instructions on how to file fraudulent tax returns.

The discovery is part of a larger effort to deter criminal activity in the county's 4,700 bed jail system. Detectives are focusing on tax fraud perpetrated by inmates.
