St. Petersburg, Florida -- A transient man from Kentucky died after being hit by a car while walking on 5th Avenue Saturday evening.
Edward Austin Jablon III was driving his Chrysler PT Cruiser westbound on 5th Avenue North just as a pedestrian was walking out of St. Anthony's Hospital's parking lot. The pedestrian began crossing 5th Avenue, diagonally southbound, just east of a marked crosswalk when Jablon, distracted by the use of his cell phone, failed to observe the pedestrian and hit him.
The front of Jablon's vehicle struck the pedestrian, throwing him to the west where he came to rest in the eastbound curb lane. The pedestrian was transported to Bayfront Medical Center where he later died. He was transient to the area with ties to Kentucky.
