Sarasota, Florida - A nationally known civil rights leader visited Sarasota over the weekend.

Truvine Missionary Baptist Church  hosted a worship service to honor Julian Bond, who stood beside Martin Luther King in the early days of the civil rights struggle.

Bond reminded the crowd about the importance of being a registered voter.

He said, "If you don't vote, you really don't count. If you don't vote, you don't decide who your mayor is, your governor is, your president is, and if you don't decide those things it means you are letting someone else pick them and that's got to be bad news for you."

These days, the former Harvard college professor stays busy speaking across the country about the history of the civil rights movement.

Bond also took part in a luncheon in the Newtown community of Sarasota.
