LAKE WALES, Fla. (AP) - Bok Tower Gardens, a central Florida landmark, is aiming for a $12 million renovation.
The cost will pay for the creation of new gardens and restoration of existing ones, all tethered by a new, hard-surface path, giving full access to the disabled and parents with strollers. Annual members have raised all but $4.3 million of the needed funds.
Other projects include a children's discovery garden, an outdoor kitchen for private parties, a new Florida wild garden, an enhanced shuttle route and new exhibits detailing park history.
The gardens were designed by noted landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted Jr. and opened 85 years ago.
The Lakeland Ledger reports that a celebration of the anniversary will take place Saturday with free admission and special tours.
