St. Petersburg, FL -- The impact of the new Walmart Neighborhood Market in Midtown may be felt the most in the wallet of residents who live in the area.

That's because they could end up saving hundreds of dollars a year by shopping at the new Walmart for groceries, versus buying the same items at some of the convenience stores and small markets in the area.

"This is going to be a Godsend," Ron Hall told 10 News about Walmart opening in Midtown.

"It'll be more convenient. People won't have to spend more gas to get more groceries," added Janecia Coney.

10 News did a price check on six items Monday and found Midtown residents will be able to save significant money once Walmart opens on Wednesday.

For example, an 18-ounce box of Raisin Bran cost $3.99 at the nearby Obama Express Food Market, but the same cereal at the new Walmart will cost just $2.97. That's $1.02 savings.

10 News also found a dozen eggs were $0.81 less at the new Walmart and a pound of salted butter was more than $2 cheaper.

When comparing Walmart prices to those at the nearby Midtown Food Market, 10 News found similar results. The same 4-pack of Angel Soft toilet paper was $1.82 cheaper at the new Walmart while a gallon of whole milk was $0.91 cheaper and a 50-ounce supply of Purex laundry detergent was more than $2.50 less.

Added up, that's a savings of $9.11 on just six items. Over a year that can mean hundreds of dollars in savings for a family living in Midtown.

"Are you kidding me?" Hall said.  "I'm on a fixed income... and I can use every dime I can save at Walmart... it helps me immensely."

The nearly 40,000-square-foot size Walmart is scheduled to open on Wednesday.

Midtown has been without a large grocery store since Sweetbay closed its store in the Tangerine Plaza at 1794 22nd St. South more than a year ago. The new Walmart will open in the same location.
