Hudson, Florida -- A Hudson High School student was arrested Wednesday after his grandmother found what appeared to be an explosive device in his backpack.
Pasco Sheriff's deputies say the items found inside consisted of a black device with two wicks at the top and bottom which was packed in electrical tape and appeared to be a homemade explosive or grenade. There were also four bullet casings that appeared to have a sealed wick at the top.
The 17-year-old's home on Smith Boulevard was evacuated and the Hillsborough Sheriff's Office Bomb Squad came out to assess the situation. The black device was determined to be a foam football taped with fireworks. The Bomb Squad did say, however, that if the four bullet casings were detonated they could be used as shrapnel.
After his arrest, the teen admitted to making the items because "he was bored and said he was going to detonate them in his back yard. He was charged with planting a hoax bomb and destructive device and taken to the Juvenile Assessment Center.
