Clearwater, Florida -- Clearwater Police detectives have confirmed the identity of a man's body found three miles offshore by a fishing boat back on Sept. 17 as 40-year-old Jose Gabriel Fajardo.
Around 7:35 that morning, Coast Guard officials had received a call from the Reel Deal fishing boat that they found a body. Representatives of the Coast Guard Station Sand Key met the boat and retrieved the body less than an hour later and brought it to shore at the station on Gulf Boulevard.
Detectives say Fajardo was the man last seen alive at 5 p.m. Sept. 15 when he told his cousin he was going to swim from the Holiday Inn Sunspree on S. Gulfview Blvd. where he had been drinking to nearby Shephard's Beach Resort.
The cousin went to look for him Sunday evening at 8:00 at Shephard's when she and her children had to leave, but she could not find him.
He was not reported missing to Clearwater Police until Monday evening.
