Lakeland, Florida -- Polk County Sheriff's deputies are asking for the public's help in a hit and run fatal crash Wednesday night.
Deputies say around 9:41 p.m., a pedestrian -- wearing a reflective vest and pushing a wheelchair -- was crossing the southbound lanes of South Florida Avenue near the entrance to the Outback Steakhouse outside the crosswalk.
At the same time, witnesses say a red Honda or Acura sedan appeared to be speeding south on the same road when it hit the man on the passenger side of the car sending him and the wheelchair flying several hundred feet from where he was hit.
The unidentified man died at the scene. The driver of the car slowed after the crash, but did not stop, and left the area.
Anyone with information about this investigation is urged to contact the Polk County Sheriff's Office Traffic Homicide Unit at 863-287-5552, or 863-298-6200.
