LAKELAND, Florida -- A 59-year-old man has died after authorities say he was struck by a car while riding a bicycle on Lake Hollingsworth Drive.

Lakeland Police say a white Toyota Camry driven by 74-year-old Ronald Akins was traveling northbound when witnesses say he lost control of his car and ran off the roadway. Akins reportedly veered back into the roadway, crossing into the opposite lane, but not before he struck Byers Levy with his front bumper.

Levy reportedly tried to evade the impact, but was unable to do so. He was ejected from the bicycle.

Levy was taken to Lakeland Regional Medical Center, where he died from his injuries. Akins was also taken to the hospital with minor lacerations.

The accident is still under investigation.
