Tampa, FL -- A man who spent most of his life serving his country and others is giving back once again, with a $300,000 check from his estate to the University of South Florida Foundation.
Dr. Walter Allwein was a surgeon and retired colonel in Vietnam who did quite a bit of pro bono work for veterans before he died earlier this year. His friends say he came from humble circumstances and never married.
A fundraising friend once asked what he was going to do with all his money which sparked a conversation about what he left behind. On top of the $100,000 he already donated to the university before he died, the additional money will go towards scholarships to military vets injured in the line of duty are doled out in his name to help them return to school after serving overseas.
