TAMPA, Florida -- A Plant City man is sitting in the Hillsborough Co. jail after being connected to the death of a Tampa woman found murdered in Georgia.
Judy Murrow's body was discovered by two fishermen in the Ocmuglee River in rural southeastern Georgia on Thursday.
"We estimate the body had been in the water for just a few days. Maybe it was put in the water Monday or Tuesday," said Telfair County Sheriff Christopher W. Steverson.
Joshua Lamar Helton, 26, of Plant City has been arrested in connection with the crime.
Sheriff Steverson will not say why they think Helton is the murderer and why he was in Georgia with Murrow because the investigation is ongoing.
Helton is in the Hillsborough Co. jail on a no bond fugitive warrant and he could be sent back to Georgia if investigators determine that the murder took place in that state.
The victim's son told 10 News that he has known Helton for about a year and often invited him over to his mother's house for dinner, but does not know why the former Plant City High School football player would allegedly murder his mother.
"God only knows, my man. We have no money. We have nothing," said Kenneth Murrow. "It's crazy. I don't know what to think of it. I don't know what to think of it."
The 45-year-old said he is trying to scrape together enough money to retrieve his mother's body from Atlanta, where the autopsy was performed that determined she died of a gunshot wound to the head.
For 45 years, Judy Murrow lived at the same home on Hobbs Street in Tampa, where neighbors are taking the news of her death hard.
"She was a quiet neighbor, kept to herself, never bothered a soul," said neighbor Jeff Penzel.
