Tampa, Florida-- Tampa Police are assisting the Escondido, Calif. Police Department in a teen kidnapping investigation after a Tampa man was taken into custody at Tampa International Airport on Tuesday.

According to Escondido PD, the investigation launched Monday after the parents of a 14-year-old boy from Escondido reported him missing when he did not come home from school.

CBS 8 in Escondido reports the boy's parents had previously told police of explicit sexual text messages sent to their son from 36-year-old Tony McLeod of Tampa.

The police report also indicates McLeod originally initiated contact with the teen through an "online game."

After officially naming McLeod as a suspect, detectives were able to narrow in on what happened.

Apparently, McLeod flew from Tampa to Escondido and "somehow enticed the victim to leave with him", explains the report. The two then boarded a Tampa-bound, commercial airliner in Long Beach.

Mid-flight, detectives confirmed that McLeod and the teen were on the flight, and notified Tampa Police immediately.

"With quick work by Tampa police and the U.S. Marshals Service, authorities were able to meet both the suspect and teenager at the airport," CBS 8 reported. McLeod was taken into custody on the spot, as was the teenager for protection.

Federal, and local officials say the investigation continues. 10 News will continue with updates as they become available.
