St. Petersburg, Florida -- One armed robbery suspect is dead, and the other is seriously injured after they crashed their getaway car into a tree Thursday night, St. Pete Police say.

According to preliminary reports, the incident began when a customer inside a local Family Dollar Store called to report an armed robbery, saying two suspects were robbing the clerk, and at least one shot had been fired.

Police reportedly just missed the suspects when they arrived to the scene, but witnesses were able to provide them with a description of the suspect vehicle.

Officials say they spotted the car within 10 minutes, but when a marked cruiser attempted to stop the suspects, they sped away.

The officer followed them, but reports indicate the chase was brief -- ending "moments later" when the suspects crashed into a tree near 15th Ave. S and 40th St. S.

The crash was severe. St. Pete Fire and Rescue reports saying both suspects had to be extricated from the car.

They pronounced one of the suspects dead at the scene, and transported the other to Bayfront Medical Center with serious injuries.

Police say they recovered a gun from inside the vehicle that matched the description of one used in the armed robbery.
