TAMPA, Florida - More than a dozen Hillsborough County schools received millions of dollars Friday in a school recognition check from the state.

Governor Rick Scott presented the more than $8.7 million to principals and school officials in a press conference at Plant High School.

The program is aimed at acknowledging schools by giving financial rewards to those that have sustained or significantly improved learning in reading, math, science, and writing.

Last year, Hillsborough County had more "A-rated" schools than any year in school history.

It is up to the schools to decide how best to use the reward money.
