BRADENTON, Florida - A car that stopped for a dog in the road was struck from behind by another car Friday, injuring five people, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

The crash occurred at about 3:43 p.m. on Cortez Road (SR 694) east if 106th Street West.

According to the FHP accident report, a westbound car driven by Jenna Smith, 27, was stopped for a dog in the right lane. Another car driven by Rennee Lux, 19, changed from the left to the right lane and was unable to stop in time. The crash caused both cars to spin, sending Smith's car into a ditch.

Lux was taken to Blake Medical Center. She was charged with careless driving.

Smith went to Bayfront Medical Center in St. Petersburg along with her passengers 31-year-old Tiffany White, a 15-year-old and one-year-old. The infant was listed with critical injuries. The others were serious.

The FHP said the dog apparently was uninjured.
