Spring Hill, Florida -- A 9-year-old child is recovering in the hospital, days after eating a crack cocaine rock in his home.
the Hernando Sheriff's Office says the child was hospitalized early Thursday morning after going into seizures and convulsions. Blood tests at the hospital revealed cocaine in the child's system and hospital staff called the Department of Children and Families.
Detectives interviewed the child at the hospital and learned that a person, later identified as 45-year-old Kimberly Losurdo, was seen by the child smoking, snorting and ingesting illegal drugs.
On about Christmas day, the child found an "irregular shaped, rock-like" substance in the bathroom and ate it. Soon afterwards, the child began throwing up, and became more and more sick until being hospitalized.
Losurdo admitted to detectives she smokes crack and that it was possible the child ate some, thinking it was candy or a pill. It was Losurdo who called for help when the child began seizing Thursday morning.
Investigators say a crack pipe was found at their residence.
DCF removed three children, ages 9, 11 and 16, from the home. Losurdo was arrested and charged with child abuse.
The child who ingested the crack is expected to make a full recovery.
