Video: Two dead, another injured in card game shooting robbery

Police say two masked men tried robbing a group of men playing cards early Wednesday morning. A shootout ensued, and one robbery suspect, Garrick Lucas, and one of the card players, Eric Carter, were killed.

St Petersburg, Florida --  Police say two people were killed and a third person injured after a shooting early Wednesday morning.

10 News has learned a group of six men were playing cards on a patio outside the Kenwood Village Inn when two masked men attempted to rob them at gunpoint at around 3:30 a.m.

Police say 41-year-old Eric Carter was among the men playing cards. He pulled out his own gun and exchanged gunfire with one of the robbery suspects, 25-year-old Garrick Lucas. Both men were shot.

Lucas died on scene. Police say he was found with his mask still on and gun at his side.

Carter was taken to the hospital, where he later died. The third victim, who is 17, was also transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Terry Pelky, who works nearby, tells 10 News he heard four gun shots total. He says he heard the first three back-to-back and then heard the fourth shot about 15 to 20 seconds later.

Pelky was not surprised to learn of the violence at this Inn, telling us he's had to make several calls to police to get drug dealers away from the area where he works.

St Petersburg Police tell 10 News they have received about 150 calls for service to the Kenwood Village Inn location, but none have been as serious as this morning's shooting.

A second suspect is still on the run. Detectives are interviewing the other card game participants to piece together exactly what happened.

Police searched the surrounding neighborhood by air and by ground after a person reported seeing a man jump from a nearby roof. That person was not located.

It appears robbery for cash is the motive, but there wasn't much cash involved in the card game. Witnesses say the men were playing a low stakes card game called "Tonk."
