Dunedin, Florida -- An elderly woman drowned Tuesday afternoon after she reportedly fell off the boat she was riding in off Caladesi Island.
Officials say the 81-year-old Beverly Barnes was out in a small john boat on the southeast side of Caladesi Island in the mangroves with her husband, Robert, when she fell in. Robert, who was at the other end of the boat at the time, jumped in after her, pulled her out and started CPR.
It took about 20 minutes for water rescue crews to reach the boat and when they got there, Beverly was in cardiac arrest. She was taken to a local hospital where she was pronounced dead.
FWC and Clearwater Police are investigating the incident but they say there is nothing that suggests foul play was involved.
Robert, also 81 years old, was taken to a local hospital after having swallowed a significant amount of water during the rescue attempt.
