Auburndale, Florida -- A young woman may face charges after a head-on collision with a Polk County deputy's cruiser.

The accident happened Tuesday evening as the deputy, identified as Deputy Sheriff Robert McPherson, was heading to a call in the Southwest District.

Witnesses told investigators Julie McTeer was heading north on North Dixie Highway, near Evergreen Street, in her Toyota Camry when she left the roadway and drove onto the right shoulder. She then over-corrected and crossed the center lane into the southbound lane and hit McPherson head-on.

Both McPherson and McTeer had to be extricated from their cars. The sheriff's office says McTeer, 22, was taken to Lakeland Regional Medical Center where she is in critical but stable condition. She was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash. A blood sample was taken for analysis and charges are pending.

The sheriff's office says McTeer, of Lakeland, has been arrested six times before and her driver's license was under suspension for failure to pay traffic fines.

Deputy McPherson, 35, underwent surgery for a broken bone and is in good and stable condition at this time. McPherson has been with the Polk County Sheriff's Office since May 1998. His brother and sister-in-law are also members of the sheriff's office.
