Sarasota, Florida -- An investigation into the death of an 8-month-old girl on May 15 resulted in the arrest of her aunt who was caring for the girl at the time.
Investigators say an autopsy revealed Alivia Ortega died of internal injuries and her death was classified as a homicide.
When officers got to Alivia on May 14, after reports of a woman screaming for help on a balcony of McCown Towers, she had no pulse. But rescue workers were able to restore her pulse and she was flown to All Children's Hospital in critical condition.
Alivia died the next day.
Detectives arrested the girl's aunt, 55-year-old Carmen Martinez, on Sept. 12 for Aggravated Manslaughter of a Child.
The investigation continues. Anyone with additional information regarding Alivia's injuries and her death are asked to contact Detective Megan Buck at 941-954-7067.
