Treasure Island, Florida -- Pinellas County Sheriff Bob Gualtieri said a wanted suspect shot and killed by two deputies this morning was on the run after he allegedly sexually battered and impregnated an 11-year-old girl.
Gregory Johns, 42, allegedly went on a week-long crime spree while he was on the run. According to police, he robbed a couple at knifepoint in Vinoy Park, where he allegedly left a letter apologizing to the 11-year-old girl for the sexual battery.
An hour later, St. Petersburg Police say Johns broke into the home of a 78-year-old woman in south St. Petersburg and bound and gagged the woman for 12 hours.
During the same day, the sheriff said Johns called his girlfriend and apologized for ruining her daughter's life, and told her the cops would have to kill him because he was not going back to prison.
Johns has a long criminal history that includes arrests for aggravated assault, armed robbery, burglary, and a recent drug charge.
Police say the investigation began last month at Morton Plant Mease when Johns and his girlfriend brought her daughter to see a doctor because she was complaining of an upset stomach. After a doctor told them the girl was pregnant, the sheriff says Johns asked for his girlfriend's car keys so he could get his cigarettes.
An investigation revealed that Johns had sexually battered the child while her mother was at work sometime in early June.
Deputies learned Johns may have been staying at the Trail's End Motel in Treasure Island. When they arrived to arrest him this morning, the sheriff said Johns locked himself in the bathroom.
At some point, Johns opened the door and charged at the deputies with a knife, telling them he was going to kill them. The two deputies each fired five shots, according the sheriff, killing Johns.
The investigation continues.
