Manatee County, Florida -- A phone scam, police believe is targeting the Hispanic community, attempted to blackmail one woman while threatening her son's life Monday morning.
The sheriff's office says the woman received a phone call from a Miami area code saying that her son had been in an accident and that she needed to pay $1,500 for the damage done to their vehicle and another $1,500 to get her son back unharmed. They went on to tell her if she called police, they would kill him and that she was to take the money to the nearest Western Union where she would be given further instructions.
Deputies contacted her son, who said he was alright, and that he didn't know anything about his mother being contacted. His mother then received a text message saying her son was dead because she did not cooperate. Again, deputies verified her son was fine.
Through their investigation, the sheriff's office says the woman was the target of a phone scam.
