SARASOTA, Florida -- Some of the ticket counters at Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport are empty after AirTran's final flight took off from the airport this weekend.

After eight years and nearly three million passengers at SRQ, the airline announced in January that it would be backing out of several airports across the country because of rising fuel costs.

AirTran was SRQ's second most popular airline after Delta, responsible for about 30 percent of the airport's passengers. The loss delivered a $1.2 million blow to SRQ and caused the airport to lose three of its 20 daily flights -- for now.

JetBlue has added a direct flight to New York's LaGuardia Airport, United Airlines is returning to SRQ later this year to provide a flight to Chicago, and Canada Air will also be back later this year to cater to snowbirds.
