St. Petersburg, Florida - People who pump and rhythmic runners may soon have fewer fitness options to exercise. Club Industry, a trade publication, reports that LA Fitness is about to buy out St. Petersburg-based Lifestyle Family Fitness.
Calls 10 News made to the corporate offices of both companies were not returned on Tuesday.
Lifestyle members say people are talking about the news, but so far there isn't much information and they're left with a long list of questions.
"There's just rumors, everybody's talking," says member Sharon Jabens outside a St. Petersburg location. "Is our gym going to still be here? Are we going to still have our same memberships?"
Of course, one of the big questions for members is whether their favorite location will even be open. In some locations, the acquisition would create some overlaps. For example, in the Tyrone area of St. Petersburg, the Lifestyle and LA Fitness gyms are less than a half mile apart.
Lifestyle started in 1982 with one gym in Lakeland. There are now 33 locations in Florida.
LA Fitness, as the name implies, is based in California. A video from the company's website shows it's been expanding across the U.S. and into Florida. Club Industry ranks LA Fitness as the #2 fitness chain in the country when it comes to revenue.
There is money to be made from sweat and this large chain is now running to do it in Tampa Bay. "It's an economic fitness story," says Lifestyle member Ray Lanners. "This gym hasn't been that busy...we'll see what the future holds at LA Fitness."
