WINTER HAVEN, Fla. -- The Polk County coroner's office took away the body of 33-year-old Jay Sherrill after he was shot inside a mobile home off Spirit Lake Road in Winter Haven.
Police were called to the home around 2:30 this afternoon after receiving reports of gunshots.
Deputies say Sherrill got into a screaming match with his stepfather, 64-year-old Steven Phillips, who lived there with Sherrill's mother.
When Sherrill forced his way inside, deputies say Phillips grabbed a shotgun and told Sherill to leave. When Sherrill refused and threatened him, Phillips fired.
Deputies cordoned off the property to investigate, and a short time later, Sherrill's friends arrived. He was one of three men who made up the rap band TKN, and he was well-known in Polk County. His stage name was Cee-lock.
Sherrill's best friend was also part of the group. His friends sat and cried as they played his latest CD single for 10 News.
Neighbors said they never saw any problems.
Sherill has a prior record in Polk County for Aggravated Assault, Violation of Probation, and Battery, but has been trying to clean up his act ever since he learned his mom had cancer.
Investigators say there were prior altercations betwen Sherrill and Phillips. No charges have ben filed at this time.
