Beau and Calyx Schenecker
Wesley Chapel, Florida - A week ago, Julie Schenecker's public defenders announced that they will use the insanity defense when she goes to trial for the murder of her two children, Calyx and Beau.
Prosecutors already made it clear that they will be seeking the death penalty.
Monday night in Wesley Chapel, however, it was all about the memories of Calyx and Beau as the children's father and the president of GrillSmith restaurants kicked off a week-long fundraiser to honor the children.
This week, Calyx would have been a junior at King High School and her brother would have been a freshman at Freedom High School.
In a private room at the GrillSmith Restaurant at The Shops at Wiregrass, more than a dozen people gathered for dinner including students, teachers, and principals who knew the children.
Colonel Parker Schenecker was the host in the middle of it. He's the father of 13-year-old Beau and 16-year-old Calyx. Their lives were cut short back back in January at the hands of their mother, according to Tampa Police, who say she shot and killed them for "being mouthy."
During the special gathering, however, there was no mention of the way the brother and sister lost their lives. Instead, the gathering was a celebration of their lives. Colonel Schenecker said, "Your presence tonight states a lot to us. It tells me your continued love for two people who I know loved you and you know loved you."
The restaurant located at 2000 Piazza Avenue in Wesley Chapel was chosen because Calyx and Beau loved to eat there. Beau's favorite, according to his father, was the Spicy Thai Shrimp appetizer, while Calyx's favorite was the Caribbean Pumpkin Crab Bisque soup.
On Monday, their favorite dishes were enjoyed by their favorite people. Their grandmother, Parker Schenecker's own mother, attended too.
Parker has dedicated his life to honoring the memory of his children and Monday's event kicked off a fundraiser to raise money for a foundation established in honor of his children to recognize other Bay area teens for their leadership, athletics, and performing arts abilities.
From now until Sunday, August 28th, during back to school week, GrillSmith is donating 100 percent of its sales from Beau and Calyx's favorite dishes to the Calyx and Beau Schenecker Memoral Fund.
Billy Grimm is the president of GrillSmith Restaurants and says, "By doing that, we not only bring awareness to the fund itself, but also shine a little light on two amazing kids that quite frankly were taken away too soon."
GrillSmith has several locations across the Bay area.
