(WPRI) -- A new popular game for teens is becoming a warning for parents.
"Cinnamon Challenge" is a dangerous game that is landing kids in the
hospital. The challenge begins with a teenager dared to swallow a
spoonful of ground cinnamon without drinking water and then posting it
to YouTube to show what happens next.
Poison control centers and
the Journal Pediatrics say that cinnamon coats and dries the mouth and
throat, causing gagging, vomiting, choking, and throat irritation.
According to Doctors of Respiratory Distress, teens with asthma are at greater risk.
Courtney Miller, age 12, took the challenge and has been to the hospital numerous times.
to the American Association of Poison Control Centers, the number of
phone calls to poison control regarding cinnamon has increased
In 2011, poison control centers received 51 phone calls. In the first three months of 2012, that number went up to 139 calls.
Doctors say parents need to be aware of things like the "Cinnamon Challenge" and know what their kids are viewing online.
