(Tampa, Florida)-- It's a fact..Yahoo was hacked. A third party gained access to an undisclosed number of email accounts.

STORY: Yahoo mail accounts hacked; how to protect yourself

Online consumers are constantly being told to protect their accounts, but what are the affected companies doing to protect your personal information?

That question was the impetus to a new bill co-sponsored by Senator Bill Nelson that would require the Federal Trade Commission to establish rules for how businesses protect consumer information.

"If somebody is hit and data is stolen, that they must promptly notify the affected parties, including their personal customers," said Senator Nelson.

If companies were to fail to do that, they could face criminal penalties.

USF Director of the Center for CyberSecurity Sri Sridharan says protecting information is complex and not bulletproof because big companies do business with third-party entities.

"These third party vendors kind of have access via a pipeline into these infrastructures. You can protect the infrastructures all you want, but there are other means by which these hackers are getting into these systems," said Sridharan.

Clearly, major companies like Google and Yahoo spend millions of dollars in security to protect you, but you have to protect yourself.  And if that wasn't worry enough, brace yourself.

The next frontier for hackers? Your cell phone and mobile devices.
