LAKELAND, Fla. (AP) - The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency says a central Florida-based pesticide producer has agreed to pay more than $1.7 million in civil penalties for allegedly distributing and selling mislabeled pesticides.
Federal officials say the penalty is one of the largest ever for an enforcement case under the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide and Rodenticide Act.
The agency says Harrell's LLC of Lakeland violated the act on numerous occasions between 2010 and 2012, allegedly distributing or selling pesticides without labels or with labels that were illegible.
The agency says the company has corrected all the violations.
Harrell's spokeswoman Tina Newberry says the company has strengthened its environmental compliance program.
Harrell's produces pesticides in Lakeland and Sylacauga, Ala. Most of its products are sold for the golf course, sports turf, landscape management and horticulture industries.
