Tallahassee, Florida -- Florida Governor Rick Scott has directed the head of the Department of Economic Opportunity to work with agencies in south Florida to develop a plan to transition American Airlines employees impacted by upcoming layoffs into new jobs.

American Airlines put 11,000 employees on notice that layoffs could be coming this fall as it works to reduce costs under its bankruptcy realignment plan. The company says the actual number of layoffs may be closer to about 4,000. Those impacted included ground workers and maintenance crews.

Gov. Scott says it is anticipated that 1,000 of those jobs will be Florida jobs. Workers at Miami International is bracing for the impact.

He called the announcement bad news for the company and bad news for Florida families.

"We know that Florida workers want to work, and assisting them in identifying other opportunities in our state is a top priority," said Gov. Scott.
