HARDEE CO., Florida -- The man accused of embezzling over $56,000 from a Florida church has turned himself in, according to the Polk County Sheriff's Office.
Oliver Daniel Durfey, 54, was the church administrator for the First Baptist Church of Poinciana. Deputies say he used the church's two checking accounts and savings account for his own personal use. He also allegedly obtained a debit card without the church's knowledge or permission and used it over a 26-month period.
Detectives say Durfey is running for Clerk of Courts in Osceola County and allegedly used the stolen church funds to pay for two booths at political venues for his election campaign.
Durfey has boned out of jail. His bond was set at $21,000.
