Tallahassee, Florida - Students with disabilities from around Florida are gathered at the state Capitol for an opportunity to discover new confidence and lessons for a brighter future.

About 100 high school students took over the House chamber Thursday to pose for pictures, listen to state leaders and see what's it's like to participate in a mock legislative session.

At this event, the 13th Annual Florida Youth Leadership Forum is offering students information about educational opportunities and career options.

One of the organizers of the forum says a lot of the students have not been comfortable with their disabilities as they've grown up. The forum tries to help them deal with those feelings and other challenges.

Susanne Homant of The Able Trust says students at the forum often find the determination to accomplish the things they thought were impossible.

"We see students who are now in college who never believed they could be in college. We see students who are now pursuing technical careers. We see students who are employed who never thought they would get a job. All great success stories."

The leadership forum has served more than 500 students over the past 13 years. It's sponsored by The Able Trust and the Florida Developmental Disabilities Council.
