Cantonment, Florida (PNJ) -- A Florida woman says she shot her ex-boyfriend in self-defense Friday morning after he crashed his car into her home and barged inside.

Heather McKamey, of Jacks Branch Road, declined to name the man she shot around 4 a.m., but said she had filed a restraining order against him a month ago and he still has been harassing her.

The two had broken up a couple of months ago, she said.

"This has been happening for months," McKamey said, clearly frustrated and rattled. McKamey said she had contacted authorities about the harassment repeatedly prior to today.

On Friday morning she said she was in the home along with two other family members when the man, who has a history of brushes with the law, drove his Nissan Altima into her home.

She said she shot him out of fear for her safety and the safety of her family.

"It was an act of self-defense," she said of the shooting that left the man hospitalized.

Escambia County Sheriff's Office deputies say he is still being treated in a local hospital.

Escambia County Sheriff's Office Spokesman Matt Baxter said no further details on the identity or the condition of the man involved are available at this time.

More details are expected to emerge later this afternoon as the investigation continues.

Meanwhile, the scene was quiet on Jacks Branch road later this morning, but the damage from the rampage was still evident.

Tire marks originated from the road tracked through a long yard and ended where the vehicle smashed into the right side of the home near the door.

The car didn't go through the house, but did significant damage to the brick wall and door frame.

"Why does this have to happen before they (law enforcement) get involved?" McKamey said as she stood by her mangled door frame.
