Sanford, Florida -- On the day George Zimmerman was formally arraigned on a second degree murder charge in the shooting death of Trayvon Martin, his attorney filed motions waiving the neighborhood watch captain's right to a speedy trial and one seeking more time to prepare for a trial.

Neither Zimmerman nor his attorney Mark O'Mara appeared in court Tuesday for the arraignment. Several weeks ago, Zimmerman entered a written plea of no contest.

Zimmerman remains free on a $150,000 bond and a pretrial hearing has been scheduled for August 8.

Meantime, Richard Myers is settling in as Sanford's interim Police Chief. Myers tells 10 News he has not yet been briefed on the Zimmerman case but expects that will happen next week.

Retired after serving as police chief in Colorado and Wisconsin Myers says he didn't have any reservations about stepping in, despite the controversy surrounding Sanford's Police Department and its handling of Martin's death investigation.

"A lot of colleagues described it (as a hornet's nest) and were suggesting there's no win that can come out of it. Well I don't see it as a game where there's got to be a winner. This is an organization, a community in crisis, it needs some healing, it needs some leadership and it desperately needs some intense work on relationship building," Myers said.

Myers' contract calls for him to be the interim chief for three-to-five months, but it can be extended if needed. However Myers says he is not interested in taking over the job permanently.
