ORMOND BEACH, Fla. -- A 21-year-old New Jersey man was killed and a 21-year-old New York woman was critically injured Friday when a sport utility vehicle carrying six college students headed to Miami for spring break overturned on Interstate 95 in Volusia County, authorities said.
Jee Choi was killed and Valerie Corvino was injured in the crash, which occurred about 8:40 a.m. in the southbound lanes of I-95 at at mile marker 276 near Ormond Beach, the Florida Highway Patrol said.
According to troopers, 21-year-old Kyla Graham, of Honolulu, was driving a 1998 Landrover when the SUV began to swerve, and she overcorrected. The SUV overturned multiple times, ejecting Choi and Corvino.
Choi was pronounced dead at the scene, and Corvino was found trapped under the SUV, troopers said. Corvino was taken to Halifax Medical Center, the FHP said.
Three of the four others, including Graham, suffered minor injuries. The other passenger was not hurt.
All six attend school in Pittsburgh and were in Florida for spring break, troopers said.
The crash remains under investigation.
