LAS VEGAS (USA TODAY) -- CES 2014 always has lots of innovation and fun products, but TVs dominate the show.

Huge, ultra high-definition sets, many this year with curved bodies, are stacked wall to wall here at the show, which opened officially Tuesday, after two days of previews.

The LG booth alone had over 100 gorgeous flat-panel TVs lined up, from left to right, and top to bottom, to create a TV-like symphony. And here's a surprise -- they were 3D sets, the format manufacturers tried to get the public enticed about three years ago, only to find a lack of interest.

The manufacturers haven't given up though on 3D. "It's still the holy grail for manufacturers," says USA TODAY's Mike Snider.

Snider, Ed Baig and I roamed the floors Tuesday, checking out the TVs. My favorite: LG's 98-inch Ultra HD 4K set. If you haven't heard, 4K is the new format from manufacturers that promise four times the resolution of standard HD.

In back-to-back tests in the past, I hadn't been able to see much of a difference. Sure, 4K looks great, but so does HD. However, this 98-inch set -- no price announced, but probably over $50,000, notes Snider -- had the crispest, most colorful display I've ever seen on a TV. I want one, but don't know if I'm ready to put down a second mortgage for one.

However, today I'll have to get to the Vizio booth to take a second look at its TVs. The company, which historically has lower prices than manufacturers, announced a new 50-inch Ultra HD set (P-Series) later this year for $999. Competitors had similar models this year for $3,000 to $5,000.

But it's half as big as the LG model. Oh well, at least it's on my budget.
