(USA TODAY) It shouldn't surprise you that Selena Gomez is surrounded by more publicists, bodyguards and handlers than one reporter can count.
After all, the petite pop star is dating Justin Bieber! Or isn't she?
Reporter Vinay Menon from The Toronto Star certainly wasn't allowed to ask about that when he interviewed Gomez about her new album.
And with all the tight security and rules, Menon's story became about all that goes with gaining entree to Gomez and not so much about the star herself.
Menon is told more than once that no questions about Bieber would be allowed. He also couldn't ask Gomez about her clothes, her friends or her looks. And he would have 10 minutes to chat about the music.
But first, Menon needed to hear the music.
He writes: "So before this highly controlled swap of treacly platitudes masquerading as 'an interview' can unfold, I've been asked to arrive an hour early to sample 'the music.'"
Menon is told he has to hand over all recording devices and his notepad while he listens. "The CIA might consider retaining the Selena Gomez PR machine for all future operations in dance zones," writes Menon.
Finally, he gets to Gomez. He asks how she would describe herself.
I'm super laid back," says the star. "I'm from Texas. I love my family. I still live with my parents. I drive the same car that I've driven since I was 16. That's who I am."
And as a performer?
"As a performer, I just love to make people smile. I just love to make people move and dance. There's not really much more to it."
And there's really not much more to the story.
