(USATODAY.com) - When it comes to box office, minions are mighty.
The jabbering yellow sidekicks of Despicable Me 2powered the animated family film to a whopping $34.3 million on Wednesday, virtually guaranteeing it will run off with the lucrative July Fourth holiday weekend.
The opening day trounced Johnny Depp's The Lone Ranger, which limped into the holiday with $9.7 million.
Monsters University took third place with $5.4 million, barely ahead of Melissa McCarthy's cop comedy The Heat with $5.2 million.
Full holiday weekend estimates are due Sunday.
