TAMPA, Florida -- Police say the lockdowns have been lifted at several Tampa schools on Wednesday afternoon.
Three Tampa schools went on full lockdown as police searched for an armed suspect in the area of 26th Street and East Chelsea Street.
Those schools were Ferrell Middle School, Middleton High School, and Lomax Elementary School. Potter Elementary, Lockhart Elementary, and Young Middle School were placed on a modified lockdown.
Officers say they will remain on school campuses until all children have left.
The Tampa Police Department says a school resource officer was directing traffic in front of Ferrell Middle School at 2:57 p.m. when he heard gunshots. He reportedly spotted two teens on a bike at East Chelsea Street and 25th Street. When the resource officer attempted to speak with them, they fled southbound on Chelsea.
The teen riding on the handle bars of the bike reportedly jumped off and ran into a field. Police established a perimeter began their search for the suspects.
A police K9 discovered a recently fired gun near a fence where the suspect jumped over. A thorough search of the area made officers confident the suspect was no longer in the area.
TPD says there is no indication the school was targeted at this time.
