TALLAHASSEE, Florida (AP) -- Teachers unions have sued the state and three local school boards over performance evaluations that grade Florida's teachers on subjects and students they don't teach.

The suit was filed Tuesday in federal court in Gainesville. It's backed by the National Educational Association and Florida Education Association and includes seven teachers from around the state as plaintiffs.

Their complaint challenges the Student Success Act passed in 2011. It alleges that the current teacher evaluation system violates teachers' constitutional rights. That system is partly based on scores from the high-stakes Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test - or FCAT.

The Florida Department of Education did not immediately comment on the suit.
