Captain Scott Bierwiler
Andrew Frank Morris
Brooksville, Florida - 42-year-old Scott Bierwiler, a Captain with the Hernando County Sheriff's Office, died in a head-on collision on Powell Road about 5:45 this morning.
He was on his way to work in an unmarked 1999 Ford Crown Victoria.
"It was a big bang and then a screech afterwards. It woke me and my dogs up," said Susan Farites, who lives on Powell Road.
FHP says a 16-year-old boy driving a 2002 Mitsubishi Montero crossed the center line and smashed into the deputy.
Andrew Frank Morris of Weeki Wachee was airlifted to St. Joseph's Hospital in Tampa. Authorities say a family member reported the Mitsubishi had been stolen.
"We did receive some reports indicating that, but all that's still coming in the investigation about whether the determination was, the vehicle did belong to his parents," said FHP Spokesman Steve Gaskins.
Morris' neighbors say he often drove his mother's white Mitsubishi SUV to school. His MySpace page indicates he is a junior at Nature Coast High School.
"There's not one thing wrong with that boy. Polite, just great," said Lucille Curry who lives across the street from Morris.
Hernando Sheriff's Deputies say Captain Scott Bierwiler, a 22-year-veteran, supervised the patrol, aviation and canine units.
"And trying to come to work early and do your job and to be down at age 42, it just... it's a loss for this community a loss for this agency, cause he was the future of this agency, and particularly a loss for his family," said Hernando County Sheriff Richard Nugent.
Bierwiler leaves behind his wife of 20 years, Angie, two teenage daughters Kayla and Kiley and his 9-year-old son. Scottie.
Bierwiler was a member of St. Theresa's Catholic Church and was born in Cold Spring, New York on March 21, 1966.
The Bierwiler name is well known in Hernando County law enforcement. The captain's father, Frank Bierwiler, was a former public information officer for the sheriff's office. He passed away in 2006.
As of 5:30 Monday afternoon, Morris was reported in serious but stable condition at St. Joseph's Hospital.
