Tampa, Florida-- The man who authorities say charged at an FBI agent at the front gate of MacDill Air Force Base is identified as 61-year-old Ronald Bullock of Hampden, Massachusetts.

Bullock, an army veteran and guest at the base FAMCAMP, was fatally shot by an FBI agent after authorities say he charged at the agent with a knife.

Col. Larry Martin, commander of MacDill's 6th Air Mobility Wing says around 6:00pm security forces responded to a report of an altercation at the family camp area on the base's south side.

"One of the individuals involved in the altercation fled from the scene on his motorcycle at high speed," said Col. Martin Wednesday night. "Security forces attempted to stop the individual however he evaded pursuit and continued to the Dale Mabry gate."

Col. Martin says the base was already on lock down when the suspect got off his motorcycle and was fatally shot after charging an FBI agent with a knife while the agent was attempting to help secure the Dale Mabry exit.

"The agent took defensive action and shot the individual," said FBI special agent Dave Couvertier. "He was coming at the agent with a knife, directly at the agent on foot."

A team of federal investigators is looking into what happened, and will determine if the use of lethal force was justified.

Tampa Police will assist in the investigation but will allow federal officials to take the lead role since the shooting involved an FBI agent.

The military base's main gate at MacDill remained closed much of the night but finally reopened Thursday morning around 3:00am.

MacDill Air Force Base is home to US Central Command and oversees military operations in the Middle East and Central Asia.
