Bartow, Florida -- The State Attorney's Office announced Wednesday afternoon that it will not formally charge Kiera Wilmot who was arrested last month on felonies for mixing household chemicals in a small plastic bottle outside Bartow High that then went off on school grounds.

Kiera's many supporters will no doubt be excited to hear the news. Once the story aired on May 1, it quickly went national prompting online petitions, signed by thousands, calling for leniency for the honor student. Even the courthouse in Bartow was the site of protests in support of her.

The State Attorney's Office said after "completing its review and taking into consideration the facts and circumstances of the case and her lack of criminal history" they decided to dismiss the case.

Kiera's not totally out of the woods, however, as she and one of her parents signed an agreement to successfully complete a Department of Juvenile Justice Diversion Program. Once she completes the program, she will be formally cleared of all charges.

After hearing the news, 10 News called Kiera's mother, Marie, who said the family is relieved that the charges have been dropped and that Kiera can start putting this incident behind her.

Marie is hoping that school officials will allow Kiera to return to Bartow High School. Right now she's attending Bill Duncan Opportunity Center, an alternative high school.

The Polk County School District has not yet commented on what disciplinary action Wilmot will face.
