St. Petersburg, Florida -- Two of the biggest names in 20th century art -- Salvador Dali and Andy Warhol -- are joining forces. A major exhibit featuring more than a hundred works of Andy Warhol opens Saturday at the Dali Museum in St. Petersburg.
The exhibit, Warhol: Art. Fame. Mortality. includes nearly 35 paintings, 20 drawings, 50 photographs, a selection of films and television programs created by Warhol. It will run through April 27.
"Dali is the elder generation... he is the father figure to Warhol," said Dr. Hank Hine, Executive Director of the Dali Museum. "In a sense, Dali set the stage for Warhol and Warhol took it to new heights and I think, made this work ever more accessible."
The Dali Museum has been in its current location for just three years and recently surpassed one million visitors. St. Petersburg mayor Rick Kriseman expects the Warhol exhibit will increase attendance and tourism.
"Having an exhibit like this is huge," said Mayor Kriseman. "To have a museum of this stature and has these kinds of works and brings exhibits like this to the community makes my job that much easier."
The Warhol exhibit also gives visitors a chance to experience their own 15 minutes of fame. A simulated Warhol screen-test will record visitors for around three minutes. They can then save their "movie" and share it with friends online.
"This is going to be a great success," said Dr. Hine. "Warhol is accessible, he's dramatic, the show has a strong theme and a great takeaway."
The works are on loan from The Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh.
