Sarasota, Florida -- To you, a cell phone may just be a high tech toy.  You surf the Internet, text message... it's more a matter of convenience than necessity.

But for one Sarasota woman, having a second cell phone saved her life.

Jeanie said, "My ex-husband attacked me in my apartment.  He grabbed me, strangled me, threw me across the room and head butted me twice.  After the attack, I went to get my cell phone and he saw that I was trying to make a call to 911, and he took it from me.  My attempts were not successful until I got to that second cell phone."

Jeanie got her phone through Safe Place and Rape Crisis Center.
SPARCC collects used cell phones to help victims of domestic violence and sexual assault. Donated cell phones are refurbished and programmed to serve as 911 phones to help those in crisis.

Donations are accepted at SPARCC's Sarasota Outreach Office located at 2139 Main Street. Phones do not have to be in working order. If possible, please include chargers and clear the phones of personal information.
