A 10 News viewer, Geraldine, recently called the 10 News Investigators concerned about a man who had been knocking on doors, representing a company named Bankers Life and Casualty Company, trying to solicit business for insurance policies.
The viewer was concerned because the man at the door was trying to verify personal information!
10 News Investigators checked it out and verified the company is a legitimate business which posts on their website:
"For more than 130 years, Bankers Life and Casualty Company has been helping individuals and families protect their financial security and prepare for retirement. Bankers serves the retirement market through a broad portfolio of affordable, quality health and life insurance products and annuities."
The 10 News Investigators called the company to get to the bottom of their sales practices. Bankers Life and Casualty Company issued this statement:
"Bankers Life and Casualty Company's agent sales practices include contacting people by phone, mail and in person - including directly at their homes - with a special focus on networking through referrals from current policyholders. Our agents provide company-approved business cards and are encouraged to wear name badges that identify themselves by name and company during in-person visits. We adhere to Do Not Call requirements when contacting people by phone as well."
As a consumer advocate, the 10 News Investigators want to remind you if you receive any solicitations door to door, you do not have to answer. You also have the right to refuse answering any questions and request the person to leave.
