HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, Florida -- County traffic engineers say they will add time to yellow lights at red light camera (RLC) intersections by the end of the month, ahead of the timetable set by the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT).
TIMELINE: 10 News' Short Yellows Investigation
At their regular board meeting on Aug. 21, Hillsborough County BOCC voted unanimously (5-0) to expedite the implementation of FDOT changes, on a motion made by Commissioner Kevin Beckner following a series of 10 News investigations.
MAP: Short yellows in your neighborhood
The first red light signals to receive this updated yellow light timing will be the six intersections with red light cameras:
- Bloomingdale Avenue & Bell Shoals Road (NB)
- Brandon Boulevard & Grand Regency Boulevard (NB)
- Fletcher Avenue & Bruce B. Downs Boulevard (NB, EB, WB)
- Sligh Avenue & Habana Avenue (EB)
- Waters Avenue & Anderson Road (EB, WB)
- Waters Avenue & Dale Mabry Highway (EB, WB)
The other approximately 500 red light signals in Hillsborough County will also be re-timed, hopefully by the end of the calendar year....two years ahead of FDOT's schedule for non-RLC intersections.
The county retimings will only affect intersections in unincorporated areas; the City of Tampa tells 10 News it won't have its red light camera intersections adjusted before the end of the year, while it may be 2015 before the entire city is corrected.
