Lakeland, Florida -- Republican vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan was booed at an AARP conference on Friday when he said "The first step to a stronger Medicare is to repeal Obamacare, because it represents the worst of both worlds."

The Republican congressman from Wisconsin went on to say he expected his comments would draw a mixed reaction.

"It weakens Medicare for today's seniors and puts at risk for the next generation," Ryan then told the crowd in New Orleans.

After his speech, Ryan flew to Lakeland where he got a much different reception. About three dozen supporters greeted Ryan at the Lakeland airport, some waving signs, others cheering and clapping.

Ryan, who arrived with his mother, declined to answer questions from the media but did take time to sign autographs for his supporters.

Ryan stopped in Lakeland for a private fundraiser but will have two public events in Florida on Saturday.

A rally is planned for Saturday morning in Miami and a town hall meeting in Orlando is scheduled for the afternoon at the University of Central Florida.
