ST. PETERSBURG, Florida -- The state of Florida has roughly one BILLION dollars in unclaimed cash and property! Could some of it be yours?
The state ends up with this money when companies can't track you down because of a typo, address change, or incomplete information. The money can come from security deposits, insurance payments, or investments.
10 News found almost $100,000 for the Tampa Bay school system, $95,000 for Shriners Children's Hospital of Tampa, and more than $8,000 for a local fire department.

Heirs can also try to claim money on behalf of a deceased relative, so it's worth searching the Florida Division of Financial Services website to see if you, your family, relatives or even your employer has unclaimed cash or property.
Type in your name. If you find an account that appears to match your information, the website will walk you through what documents you need to prove you are the rightful owner. The state typically takes up to 90 days to cut a check.
