TAMPA, Florida -- Right off I-275 at the Fletcher Avenue exit in Tampa, they still proudly display the Days Inn logo. But Days Inn says it's not one of their properties, the motel having changed its name to America's Best Inn & Suites in 2012.

Customers we talk to say this motel could easily be one of Tampa Bay's worst. The business has racked up numerous complaints, with state inspectors documenting live roaches and even egg sacks inside guest rooms.

Among the complaints from customers in March: roaches, sheets with blood stains, even hypodermic needles outside one room.

In 2012, more customers complained of horrible smells, roaches, bed bugs, and "sheets with stains on them from the couple before us."

In September, Shirly Sladko sent pictures to the state of overflowing garbage cans and the pool area in disrepair.

"Get rid of that whole thing. I think it should be condemned," said Sladko of the motel she will never stay at again.

In a telephone interview, Sladko told 10 News she finally requested a refund after her family found a mouse crawling through their room.

"It comes out from behind the TV, up the lamp cord, and that's when we both hollered."

But it's what state inspectors found inside this motel's kitchen that forced an emergency closure on April 11. The state documented 23 violations including:

  • Buffet plates not properly protected to prevent contamination
  • Holes in the ceiling
  • An objectionable odor coming from the kitchen
  • Hundreds of rodent droppings under the cooks line
  • Rodent rub marks along the walls
  • EVEN a rodent skull found on a table in an unused portion of the restaurant

After the state allowed this motel's dining room to reopen, we wanted to check things out ourselves.

"I'm sorry, turn that off, you're not authorized to be in there," the evening front desk manager told our photographer as he walked inside. Hotel management clearly didn't want us anywhere near the kitchen, also refusing to provide the state required copy of their latest inspection report.

"I cannot. He just strictly told me no," said a woman who identified herself as the motel's general manager.

As of April 24, 10 News has learned the former Days Inn Property now has a brand new owner. That owner says he specializes in turning around poorly run properties and promises top to bottom renovations throughout the motel. He's invited 10 News back to take a look around once the renovations are complete.
